Chapter 20: Sauna
The sauna stood at the bottom of the bluff, a cedar hut with a stovepipe, thirty feet from the black edge of the lake.
It was four in the afternoon, and the sun was already going down red behind the pines.
We had until eight.
Griffin had stoked the stove for an hour, and the little window was white with steam.
"Lake first," I said.
"It's thirty-four degrees."
"I know what the lake is."
"You'll hate it."
"I will," I said.
"Then I'll love the sauna twice as much."
We stripped on the dock in the wind.
My skin went to gooseflesh from collarbone to knee, and my nipples tightened to stones.
I stood there shaking with my arms wrapped around my belly, wearing nothing but my gap-toothed grin.
He took my hand.
"Together," he said.
"On three."
"On one," I said, and jumped, and dragged him in behind me.
The cold hit like a slap from God.
I went under, and came up shrieking, and the shock rang in every bone.
Griffin came up beside me with his hair plastered flat and his beard dripping and let out a howl that went across the whole lake.
"Out!" I screamed.
"Out, out, out!"
We scrambled up the ladder and ran, naked, across the frozen planks and into the hut, and I slammed the door behind us.
Heat smacked me in the face.
It was dry and fragrant and enormous, and my skin burned and prickled as the blood rushed back.
We stood in the dim cedar room, wet and steaming, laughing, and slowly the laughing slowed.
Griffin looked down at me.
