Chapter 14: The Table

Sunday dinner was set for twelve.

The long table in the Sabatini dining room had its good plates out, and Ottavio sat at the head with his gold ring on the cloth.

Nico took my hand under the table.

Gia sat on my other side, in red lipstick and a black dress, with her chin up.

Jillian came in last.

She kissed Ottavio's cheek, then Nico's, then mine, and she smelled of the same jasmine she had worn for eight years.

"Wynnie," she said warmly. "You look tired."

I smiled at her and did not answer.

Dessert was not yet cleared when she set down her fork.

"Ottavio, may I say something first?"

"You called this dinner, cara. Say it."

Jillian rose, smoothing her blazer, and her blue eyes were wet.

"I found the Ghost," she said. "I wish I hadn't."

The table went quiet.

"It's Gia."

Gia laughed out loud.

"The lines you forged under my name didn't take," Gia said. "So you're trying again?"

"The christening alibi was arranged," Jillian said, to the room. "Someone helped her clear it. Why would the girlfriend of a Sabatini stand up for Gia so fast, unless they were in it together?"

Every head turned to me.

My hands were cold, and I put down my glass.

Nico squeezed my fingers once.

I stood before Ottavio could speak.

"May I ask Jillian something?"

"Wynne," Nico murmured, and I heard a question in it.

I looked at him, and I saw he was asking, not stopping me.

"Go ahead," I said, to him alone.
