Chapter 22: The Water Takes
The water did not boil, and it did not ripple.
It went black as a shut eye, and then it began to climb her arm.
Hera tried to pull her hand out of the bowl.
The water held on.
It crawled over her wrist like ink up a wick, and she stared at it as if it were a stranger.
"No," she said.
"I have sworn on you for a thousand years."
"You have sworn truths," said the herald, in a thin voice.
"That was a lie."
A sound went around the Stadion.
It was like the first drops of rain on a tin roof.
The braids on Hera's head, which were the crown of her power, began to smoke at the tips.
The little flames ran up through her hair, black and violet, and they sputtered.
She wrenched free and fell back, with the hem of her cloak on fire.
Black ink ran off her fingers onto the sand and hissed.
"A trick," she said.
"The accused tampered with the bowl."
"I never touched it," I said.
"Then she is a witch.
Seize her!"
Nobody moved.
I stood in the middle of the sand with my mother's hand in my left and the cold quiet of the scar in my right.
