Chapter 24: The Daughter of Zeus
Zeus took the years back at the top of the cloud stair, with one hand on Alekos's shoulder.
They came out of him as light, slow and gold.
He stood there with his eyes closed, and the grey streak in his beard did not change.
When it was done he took a breath and held it.
"Cold," he said, wondering.
"My knees ache."
"Welcome to Tuesday," I said.
He opened his eyes, and he was laughing, openly, in a way I had never heard.
"Twenty-six hundred years," he said, "and you're the first person to tell me it's Tuesday."
"It's Thursday," Zeus said.
"Go home."
We went down the stair.
It rang under my boots, and then it was grass, and then the real mountain wind was in my face.
The Bitterroots stretched out in every direction, red and gold in the late light.
My mother stopped on the ridge and put both hands over her mouth.
The boot had been found at the edge of a creek four miles below.
We walked there together, the three of us, with the tin in my mother's arms.
She didn't speak the whole way.
At the creek the willows had gone yellow.
The water ran loud and clear over smooth stones.
