Chapter 23: One Table
Lorna's kitchen table seated six, and she set it for four.
"I have cooked for four hundred schoolchildren a day for nineteen years," she said, and put down a pot roast big enough for ten. "I don't know how to cook for four."
"Lorna, that is not dinner for four," Cassidy said.
"Then I'll send you home with the rest, and you'll thank me in Nevada."
Cassidy laughed, and Lorna's face did something that made me look at my plate.
"Eat before it gets cold," Lorna said.
Cassidy ate.
Levi ate with his bandages off, flexing his scabbed knuckles, and he and his sister fought for the last roll.
"You owe me twenty years of rolls," Levi said.
"You were twelve. You owe me the rabbit's ear."
"I owe you the rabbit's ear?"
"You said it was fixed. It was crooked, Levi. It's still crooked."
Lorna laughed so hard she had to put her napkin over her mouth.
I watched all of them from the end of the table.
That was the strangest thing about it.
Nobody here was going to leave.
"My parents called the state agents last night," Cassidy said, between bites. "I asked them to. They were scared to death, and they did it anyway. A lawyer's going with them Monday."
"Will they be all right?" Lorna asked.
"I don't know." She put her fork down. "I told them I would stand up in court and say they sat up with me every night for twenty years. It's all I've got. It might not be enough."
Nobody said anything.
Then Lorna reached across the table and took her hand, and Cassidy let her.
