Chapter 10: Under Oath
The family court of Genoa sat in a plain room on the second floor, with a wooden bench, a flag and eight chairs.
It did not look like a place that could take a company from anyone.
My father sat on the left with his lawyer and a folder as thick as a loaf of bread.
Ugo sat behind him.
I sat on the right with the notary and a young advocate he had found for me.
Hanna sat behind us, having been told she could stay if she did not speak.
Gaetano sat behind us, alone, in the row between the two sides.
My father did not look at him once.
The judge was a gray woman in her sixties with glasses on a cord, and she did not look at anyone for longer than a second.
"We are here," she said, "to consider whether a minor holder of company shares is fit to exercise the vote. Counsel for the father."
My father's lawyer rose.
"Your Honor, this case is a sad one. Four years ago the girl pushed her sister down a staircase, and the family sent her away to be helped."
"Helped," I heard Hanna breathe, and the advocate touched her sleeve.
"She has returned a stranger, and a sudden beneficiary," the lawyer said. "She has held a press conference at the gate of her home. She has taken over the company board in a single morning. We ask only that a responsible adult manage her interest until she is mature."
"Your evidence?"
"Her brother Ugo, who saw the aftermath."
Ugo stood.
He walked to the box, put his hand on the book, and swore the oath in a steady voice.
My stomach turned over.
"Signor Falconieri," said the lawyer. "Tell the court what you saw."
