Chapter 24: The Stairs
The villa gates stood open when we drove up the hill.
There were no reporters.
There was only the old housekeeper on the gravel in her best black coat, with a bucket at her feet.
"I washed it this morning," she said, when I got out. "I wanted it clean for you."
"Thank you."
"I put the sign out."
She looked at me, and her mouth shook, and she did not say anything else.
The front doors were wide.
The staff stood along the wall of the hall in two rows, the cook, the maids, the gardener with his cap in his hands.
Nobody spoke.
For two weeks they had been told to call me the girl.
Now the cook took one step forward and bowed her head.
"Signorina Nerina," she said. "Welcome home."
"It's only Nerina," I said. "But thank you."
Her face crumpled, and she laughed.
Hanna came in behind me with her bag over her shoulder, yelling something in German to her father, who was still in the car.
"He says I may stay one more week," she announced. "Then school. He says if I am not on the train by Sunday, he will come back with a lawyer who is not sixteen."
"I'll miss that lawyer," said Gaetano.
"She will be back," I said. "In the holidays, with bad Italian."
"I will come every holiday," Hanna said, and put her arms round me. "You have not seen the best of me yet."
"Your room is ready," the cook told me. "The old one. The men took the piano out this morning."
"Put the piano back," I said. "And leave the bench exactly where it was."
