Chapter 21: The Dish
By morning the story about the widow had a million shares, and my mother was too angry to talk to anyone.
I did not answer the reporters who called.
Instead I wrote one text and sent it to every one of them.
Supper, Thursday, seven o'clock, the crew table on the crush pad. Bring a camera. Mrs. Ashbury is invited too.
On Thursday night the long harvest table stood in the lamplight with a white cloth over the plank.
Nine reporters sat along both sides, with phones propped against the wine glasses.
Joaquin stood by the barrel stack with his arms folded.
Wyatt stood behind my chair.
Conrad came in at five past seven in his overcoat, with his jaw set, and sat at the far end without looking at me.
Lillian arrived last.
She came down the path in her gray raincoat on Conrad's arm, small and straight, and every camera turned toward her.
Her eyes were red, and her handkerchief was crumpled in her fist.
She was very good.
"Thank you for coming, Lillian," I said. "Sit here, by me."
I had set her place with a plate, a napkin and a small glass dish.
In the dish lay a single white pill.
She sat, and she saw it, and nothing moved in her face.
"I read what you told the papers," I said, to the table. "That I came to your home and threw out a widow. I thought you should all hear her say it to me, in person, with supper."
"I only told them the truth, dear."
"Then you won't mind this." I nodded at the dish. "You brought me one of those at every anniversary dinner for five years. You called them vitamins. You said it again on the terrace, in front of the Vintners."
