Chapter 9: A Dollar a Year

The stone cottage sat at the edge of the old block, with a slate roof and a door painted the green of wet leaves.

I knocked at seven in the morning with the lawyer's envelope in my hand.

I told myself I had come about the rent ledger.

Wyatt opened the door in a gray undershirt with a towel around his neck and his hair wet from the shower.

He looked at the envelope, and then at me.

"Ms. Quintero."

"I need to see how the cottage rent was papered. Lillian must have kept a file."

"She gives me a receipt every January. That's the file."

He stepped back and let me in.

It was one room downstairs, with a woodstove, a long table and a narrow bed behind a half wall.

A framed photograph stood on the shelf above the stove.

A woman with a wide, tired smile and an apron over her dress stood laughing at someone off to the side.

"My mother," he said. "She cooked at the manor for twenty years."

On the shelf beside the photograph stood a glass jar.

It held twelve folded dollar bills and twelve receipts, each one signed in loops I knew.

L. Ashbury, received with thanks.

I turned the jar in my hands.

"Twelve years of rent in a jar."

"It's what I could do." He took the envelope out of my fingers.

I let him.

It bent the terms I had set, because I had said nothing owed either way.

But my hand was cold, and his was warm, and I let him take it.

He read the motion standing at the table with the towel still around his neck.
