Chapter 22: Blythe Alone
Millicent's POV
The side door closed behind Seth and the bailiff, and the whole room let me stand there with my words in the air.
Then a chair scraped at the defense table.
"Mom!"
Blythe had pushed to her feet with her wrists already in cuffs.
The deputy at her elbow kept hold of her, but she leaned out over the rail as far as the chain allowed.
"Mom, please. Please look at me."
The judge had gone.
The jury had gone.
Only the families were left, and the reporters in the back row with their pens already moving.
My mother stood up slowly.
She had worn the gray suit she wore to funerals, and she looked small in it.
"Hello, Blythe," she said.
"Mom, I didn't mean for it to go like that." Blythe's face crumpled, and the tears came as easily as they always had. "It was supposed to be a fright, just a fright. Chad planned the rest. You know me. You raised me."
"I raised you," my mother said. "That's the part I'll never get over."
Blythe turned to my brother.
"Nolan. You know I'm not a monster. You picked me because you know me."
"I picked you because I was scared," Nolan said.
He wasn't looking at her when he said it.
He was looking at his own hands.
"You love me, Nolan," Blythe whispered.
"I do," he said. "That's what I'll have to live with."
She understood then that nobody was coming to the rail.
She turned slowly and found me.
I had not meant to move, but I found I was standing at the end of the aisle.
