Chapter 15: Devon's POV

Devon's POV

I didn't ask Roz to stay behind, because I wanted to keep my teeth.

She was in the passenger seat of my patrol truck before I had the door shut.

Her wrists were still red from the silver.

"Drive," she said.

"I'm driving."

"Drive faster."

I put the radio to my mouth and told the whole patrol to take the pass road, lights off.

I had them block the switchbacks from the top down.

Conall's truck was behind us, with Teagan in it.

I'd like to say I was thinking about the pups.

I was thinking about how Roz smelled like cellar and blood and apples, and how she hadn't looked at me once.

"Say it," she said.

"Say what?"

"Whatever you're working up to. I can hear you doing it."

"I should have come."

"Yes."

"I should have come the second you called, and I didn't, and I'll spend the rest of my life..."

"Devon." She didn't turn her head. "Not now. I'll have your rest of life later. Right now you drive."

I drove.

The pass road climbed in the dark, and the pack truck had a lead on us.

But it was heavy, and I had driven that road ten thousand times.

I knew where a heavy truck lost speed.

It was the first switchback, the same one where they were hit, with the guardrail still bent from the wreck.

I got there first.

Two of my wolves had already pulled a trailer across both lanes.

Four more stood in the headlights with their hands on their belts.

The white truck came around the bend and stood on its brakes.

It slid, and stopped six feet from the trailer.
