Chapter 11: Give It Back
Roxanne didn't come any closer.
She stood in the headlights with the cracked phone held out in front of her.
"Don't ask me," she said. "Please, Jo. Don't ask me what's on this."
"I haven't asked you anything."
"You were going to."
Elias had taken his arm from around my waist and stepped half in front of me.
Roxanne looked at him, and her face crumpled for a second.
"I'm sorry about your sister," she said to him.
"Why are you sorry?" Elias asked.
She didn't answer.
"Rox." I took a step forward. "Whose phone is that?"
"If I say it out loud, she takes my mom back."
Her voice cracked on the last word.
"You don't know that."
"I do. I felt it the night I spun. A hand closed around my heart and said if I ever told, it would take it back."
"Who said?"
"I don't know! The wheel! Corinna!" She wiped her face with the back of her wrist. "Jo, my mother is eating pudding. She walked down the hall yesterday. Do you understand? Do you know what I'd give to keep that?"
"What did you do, Roxanne?"
"I can't."
"What did you do?"
She looked at me for one long moment, and I saw three years of friendship go across her face.
"I'm sorry," she said again, to nobody, and got back into the car.
The tires screamed on the wet asphalt as she backed out.
Elias and I stood in the empty lot until the taillights were gone.
"She didn't deny it," he said at last.
"No."
"Do you want to go after her?"
"No," I said. "I want to know what she's afraid of first."
