Chapter 6: Her Face

Elias put one hand flat on the corridor wall.

The girl in the doorway saw him looking and touched her cheek, and a small hopeful smile started on her face.

It stopped when she saw what his face was doing.

"I know," she said. "It's the first thing everybody stares at. I woke up with it this morning."

"Where did you get that scar?" Elias asked.

"I didn't get it. It was just there."

"She fell off a bike on Route 6 when she was nine," he said. "Gravel. Four stitches. She said the scar looked like a little moon and she'd get it tattooed when she turned eighteen."

"Who?" the girl asked.

I took one step between them.

"Come sit with us," I said. "Please."

We found a bench outside the side door of Marlow Hall.

The air was cold and bright, and the grass in front of us had a frost still lying in the shade.

The lab partner sat with her sweater sleeves pulled over her hands.

She hadn't known Corinna well, she told us.

They'd been lab partners for a year and had said maybe four hundred words to each other, mostly about titration.

"She was nice to me," she said. "Nobody else was. She'd hand me the pipette and ask how my weekend was."

Her voice cracked on the last word.

"I spun Beauty because I was so tired," she said. "I've wanted a face like this my whole life. And now I have it and it hurts."

"Hurts how?" I asked.

"It's in the bones. Right here." She pressed two fingers under her eye. "It feels pulled into a different shape. And I keep waking up at night."
