Chapter 7: Terms, Hartigan

The lab partner blinked, and the slack calm went out of her face.

"Sorry," she said. "What did I come out here for?"

"Your bag," I said, and held it up, because it had been hanging on the bench the whole time.

She didn't remember a word.

Elias carried the bag, and I took her elbow, and we walked her to the campus nurse.

The nurse's office smelled of floor cleaner and old tea.

The nurse was a gray-haired woman in a cardigan, and she took the girl's pulse and pressed her fingers into her jaw without a single question.

Then she looked at me over her glasses.

"That makes five," she said.

"Five what?" I asked.

"Students this week. Waking up on window ledges, on stairs, in the shower with the water running cold." She pulled a clipboard off the wall. "Every one of them says the same number. Two-fourteen."

"Have you told the dean?"

"I told her Tuesday."

"And?"

"She said I should avoid causing a panic."

Elias leaned over the desk.

"Write down their names," he said. "Please."

The nurse looked at him for a long moment, and then she turned the clipboard around and let him copy.

We left with six names and the lab partner's hand squeezed in mine.

That night we ate in Corinna's room.

There wasn't a kitchen, so Elias had brought a hot plate from his truck, and he made box macaroni in a dented pot from the diner's lost-and-found, which I had given him that afternoon.
