Chapter 24: What the Ink Says
The night before planting, they went up to the ridge where Rin had once written the census on Kaede's back.
Spring had come to the valley.
The snow was gone.
The stubble fields lay dark and turned, ready for seed, with new green showing at the edges of the ditches.
The pine tree still stood on its shelf of stone.
Kaede spread her black cloak under it.
Rin set down her satchel and took out the fine brush, the inkwell and a candle stub.
"Lie down," Rin said.
"On my stomach?"
"On your back. Tonight I want to see your face."
Kaede lay down.
She wore a plain shirt and her old farmer's coat, and she took them off without being told.
Her body lay bare in the candlelight, long and strong and silvered, the pale scar on her chin, the black name under her hip.
"My turn first," Kaede said.
Rin blinked.
"Your turn?"
"I want to write on you."
Rin went very still.
In all of this, in all the nights, she had held the brush.
She had never thought of putting it in anyone's hand.
"I don't have good handwriting."
"I know."
"I've seen it."
"It's terrible."
Kaede sat up and took the brush gently.
"Take your robe off, Rin."
"Lie down."
"I'll go slow."
Rin took her robe off.
She lay down on the black cloak, on her back, bare to the spring night, with her braid loose on the stone.
Kaede knelt over her and dipped the brush in ink.
It was cold on the hollow of her throat.
Rin shivered.
The brush traced a line down her breastbone, and Kaede's tongue stuck out between her teeth as she concentrated.
"What are you writing?"
"Hold still."
"Kaede."
"General's orders."
Rin laughed.
Then went still, because the brush had reached her belly and was curling, slow and careful, over the soft curve.
It crossed her hip.
It drew a long loop down her thigh.
"Done," Kaede said.
"Can I look?"
"Read it with your hand."
Rin touched the ink.
It was still wet, and her fingers slid over a clumsy, cheerful row of characters.
She sat up on her elbows, tilted her head, and read.
