Chapter 4: Hold Still

The tent flap dropped behind Rin, and she tied it shut from the inside.

Kaede stood at the table with her back to the lamp.

She had been waiting.

Rin could see it in the set of her shoulders, in the way her hands hung open at her sides.

"Armor," Rin said. "Off."

Kaede's brows lifted.

"You're giving me orders now?"

"Do you want me to stop?"

Kaede looked at her for a long, hot moment.

Then she reached for the first buckle.

"No," she said. "Don't you dare stop."

"Hands down."

Kaede's hands stopped.

"I'll do it," Rin said. "Stand still."

She crossed the tent and began at the shoulders.

The pauldrons came off one at a time, lacquered black and heavier than they looked.

Rin set each on the table with a thunk.

The red cord at the throat came next.

She drew it slowly through Kaede's collar until it dropped into her palm.

Kaede's breath caught.

"Does that bother you?"

"It's the first thing anyone's taken off me in two years."

"Then I'll take my time."

She did.

She undid the breastplate straps down each side, and the plate came away with a soft clatter.

Under it Kaede wore a padded black jacket, damp with sweat and warm as a body.

Rin unlaced it from the throat down.

Her knuckles brushed bare skin, and she felt the muscle there jump.

The jacket fell.

Underneath, Kaede wore only a strip of linen bound tight across her chest.

Rin put one finger under the knot at the back and tugged it loose.

The linen unwound.

Kaede's breasts came free, round and full and marked red where the binding had cut them.

Rin looked at them for a long time.

"You're staring," Kaede said, rough.

"I'm allowed to stare."

"Rin."

"Quiet."

Rin leaned in and put her mouth on the red line under Kaede's left breast.

She kissed it softly, and then licked along it, and Kaede's whole stomach flexed.

Her abs were hard.

Her thighs, when Rin got her hands on them, were harder.

Rin slid her palms down the muscle, learning it, and found the strings of the tassets and pulled them.

The armor skirt dropped.

Kaede stood in her linen shorts and her boots and nothing else, shoulders heaving, hands clenched at her sides.

Rin sat back on her heels.

"Boots."

Kaede lifted one foot.

Rin unlaced it and slid it off, then the other, and then the shorts, all the way down.

Kaede stepped out of them and stood naked in the lamplight.

She was beautiful.

She was scarred across the ribs, and across the thigh, and a long pale stripe ran over her hip.

She was broad and strong and she was trembling.

Rin kissed the scar on her ribs, and then the one on her thigh, and then the long pale stripe across her hip.

Kaede's fingers curled at her sides with every kiss.

"Who gave you these?" Rin asked.

"The border. Two winters."

"I'm going to kiss every one."

"There's a lot."

"Then we'll be here a while."

"Tell me what you want," Rin said.
