Chapter 14: The Tent

They tied Si-hyeon to the tent pole with wet rope, which shrinks.

He sat in the dark with his lip crusting and listened to the camp settle into night.

Anseong.

He turned the word over and over, and it didn't fit anything.

It was a market town three days from the sect, on the river, famous for its noodle stalls and for nothing else.

He had been there once.

He hadn't thought of it in years.

Around midnight, the tent flap lifted.

He assumed it was a guard, and he braced himself.

It was Ha-neul, soaked from the rain and carrying a little knife, with the skinny boy with the missing tooth right behind him.

"Don't say anything," Ha-neul whispered.

"I wasn't going to."

"You were about to say 'I told you not to come.'"

Si-hyeon shut his mouth.

Ha-neul sawed through the rope with his tongue between his teeth.

The skinny boy knelt beside him and held up Si-hyeon's iron sword, wrapped in a blanket.

"I took it out of the master's tent," he whispered. "I'm sorry, senior brother. I'm sorry. I didn't know what he'd do."

"You're a fine thief."

"You're not mad?"

"I'm so proud I could cry. Be quiet."

The rope fell away.

Si-hyeon rubbed his wrists and stood, and his knees almost gave out.

Ha-neul caught his arm.

The boy looked terrible.

His eyes were red, and there were mud streaks down his white robe, and he was twenty and looked thirty.
