Chapter 15: The Basement Flat

I didn't step back to let her in.

I didn't shut the door either.

"Say the rest of it," I said.

Moira held the rail of the steps with one gloved hand.

Behind me Malachy went quietly down the hall toward the new kitchen, where the cabinets were still in their plastic.

I heard him fill the kettle.

"It was April," Moira said. "A Sunday. I came up with your blouses from the ironing, and the dressing room door was open."

"And he was at my desk."

"In your chair. He had the notebook open flat and his phone held over it, taking pictures of the pages, one after the other."

I'd been sitting on a bench at Mount Auburn that morning, telling my father I was all right.

"He didn't even close it when he saw me," Moira said.

"He said, 'If you tell her, she'll burn them. Then neither of us will ever know what she thinks.'"

"Neither of us."

"That's what he said."

The kettle began to tick on the stove at the back of the house.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Moira's mouth worked.

"Because I thought a man who read like that would come down the stairs one day," she said.
