Chapter 4: The Lemon Loaf

Delaney arrived at three with a lemon loaf wrapped in a dish towel.

She stood on my porch in a clean white cardigan with her blonde hair pulled into the same tight bun she wears to class.

"I know you don't want to see me," she said. "I wouldn't want to see me. But I couldn't sit at home."

Bridget was behind me in the hallway, and I could feel her not saying anything.

I took the loaf.

"Come in," I said.

Delaney sat on the edge of my mother's sofa with her knees together.

She looked at my bangs.

"That actually looks great on you," she said. "I mean it. You have such good eyes."

"Thank you."

"I think what Rafe did was awful. I told him so, after class."

I hadn't known that.

"What did he say?"

"Nothing. He just left." She folded her hands. "Can I see the diary?"

It was on the coffee table, closed, under my phone.

I opened it to the page for the eleventh and turned it toward her.

I didn't say anything about Bridget.

Delaney leaned over it.

She read for a while, and I watched her eyes go down the column to the sixth line.

"Oh no," she said.

Bridget made a small sound beside me.

"Bridget, you were out that Thursday. I just remembered." Delaney put a hand over her mouth. "You had the food poisoning. Oh, I'm so sorry. I must have pre-filled the sheet."

"Pre-filled it with what?" I asked.

"The names. When I'm rushed, I write everybody's name down the left side before the sign-in, so I'm not scrambling. And I think I put yours in too, Bridget, out of habit, and then someone else must have signed for you when I wasn't looking."
