Chapter 27: The Albums
The pink-haired woman's phone went up before anyone else had moved.
My mother came down the room between the tables, nodding left and right.
She climbed the stage steps and held out her hand to the bandleader for the microphone.
He looked at me.
I could have stopped her right there.
I nodded, and he handed it over.
"Friends," my mother said. "A hundred years."
"I gave this hotel twenty-six years of my life."
"On Thursday it was taken from my family by a girl I raised as my own."
"But tonight isn't about loss. Tonight is about the truth. My daughter kept this company's books for eight years."
She turned and held out her hand.
"Dorrie. Darling."
Dorrie climbed the steps in navy, with her glasses on.
My mother took her hand and drew her close, the way she'd drawn her into a spotlight once before.
Then she looked to the back wall.
"Edmund," she said into the microphone. "Come stand beside us. As always."
Edmund stood at the back wall with his hands at his sides.
He didn't move.
My mother laughed lightly.
"My husband is shy," she said, and gave Dorrie the microphone.
Dorrie held it for a moment without speaking.
