I turned the box over in my hands.
It was the size of a paperback, and heavier than it looked.
"Who left it?" I said.
"Mr. Ballantyne, ma'am. On his way to your wedding."
The clerk hesitated. "He said you'd want to open it alone, and to tell you not to."
I laughed out loud in my empty lobby.
"That sounds like him."
I didn't untie the string.
I carried it upstairs with two coffees and set it on the pillow next to Wells's head.
He opened one eye and looked at it.
"Is that a bomb?"
"It's from Edmund."
"So, a bomb."
"It's for me and Dorrie," I said. "On our birthday."
He looked at me for a long moment, and then he sat up and drank his coffee and didn't ask me anything else.
The back deck of the Lantern was full by four.
Not two hundred people this time.
