"Before we pour," Dex said, "this room deserves the truth."
The chair reached for the microphone.
He turned his shoulder to her, friendly.
"This morning my ex-wife made a scene at my table. A barrel, a child, a chalk drawing." He shook his head. "I'm not angry. I'm sad for her."
He took a folded paper out of his jacket.
I knew it from across the room.
"This is a contract for bulk wine. Sixty thousand cases' worth." He held it up to the lights. "Look who signed it as winemaker of record."
He read it out slowly.
"Liesl Arnott."
A sound went through the folding chairs.
The reporter's head came up.
"She was on my payroll when she signed this," Dex said. "She bought the bulk. She's been building a story to cover it ever since. I didn't want to do this in public. She chose public."
He folded the contract and put it back in his pocket, over his heart.
Goldie's hand found mine.
Winona leaned over and said, "Get up there before I do."
I got up.
I walked down the center aisle and up the side steps.
