Chapter 13: The Whole Table

Mr. Pascoe didn't let me stay on my feet for long.

"Sit," he said. "There's a date you need, and then you can be as angry as you like."

I sat on the edge of the leather chair with the email in my lap.

"The Harrowgate Mutual board meets the family once a year," he said.

"Thanksgiving week, the annual dinner, at the Avon house. Forty people at Constance's table."

"Who's on the board?"

"Eleven directors, mostly old friends of Donald's," Mr. Pascoe said.

"They vote on the trustee's report. They also vote on who sits in the chairman's chair after Donald."

"Garner reads the report," Conor said.

"Garner reads the report," his father agreed.

"If you want him to hear his own words, that's where. In front of every person whose opinion he has spent thirty years buying."

I folded the page in half and put it in my coat.

"Not Donald," I said. "Not yet. His heart won't take it."

"No," said Mr. Pascoe. "I wouldn't ask you to."

"But Sabina."

"Sabina has a right to know," Conor said quietly.

I drove out to Avon in the green truck with my forehead against the cold window.

Sabina was in the canopy bed room, sitting on the floor in a sweater that still had the store fold in it.

She had a stack of the Harrowgates' family albums beside her and had been crying over a baby picture of herself.

I shut the door and told her all of it, from the first page to the last line.
