Chapter 15: The Account

Conor's POV

The call came to my father's house at seven on Friday morning.

The nurse handed him the phone without a word.

I stood at the foot of the bed with a mug of tea I hadn't drunk.

My father listened for a full minute with his eyes on the ceiling.

"Yes," he said. "Yes, I understand. Yes, I have it in writing, you needn't read it twice."

He put the phone down on the quilt.

"That was Garner's lawyer," he said.

"Pascoe and Pascoe is discharged from all Harrowgate matters, effective this morning. They cite your personal involvement with Miss Quillan."

"I'm sorry," I said.

"For what?"

"For eleven percent."

"Conor, I've wanted to be rid of Garner Harrowgate's retainer since you were in law school," he said.

He folded his hands on his chest.

"I couldn't afford to. It seems he has done it for me."

"Dad," I said.

"Sit down, you're frightening the nurse."

I sat.

I had dreaded this for two weeks.

It had come in under a minute, and the room was exactly the same afterward.
