Chapter 12: The Bench
My sister called at 6:50 on Thursday, and I took it on my bench with my free hand on Waffles's back.
The sun was coming up pink behind the picnic shelter.
Three benches down, the bench ladies had their thermoses out.
Behind me on the slat I could feel Beau's weight, as I had every morning since September.
I hadn't thought twice about it.
"Tell me everything," my sister said. "Don't skip anything."
"There's nothing to tell."
"Tara."
I looked at my knees.
I was wearing the blue cardigan, and my hair was in the clip, and I was so happy that it scared me.
"I'm happy," I said. "I'm really happy, and it terrifies me."
"Okay."
"I keep waiting for it to turn out to be a joke," I said. "He's so patient, and he's so careful with the details, and he remembers everything I say."
"Honey, he's twenty-three."
