Chapter 20: Chair

Tara's POV

On Sunday I chose the kitchen.

I made scrambled eggs at nine in the morning in one of his T-shirts.

He sat in my red kitchen chair at the small table with a coffee, and watched me do it.

"You said you'd choose," Beau said.

"I'm choosing."

"This is eggs."

"The eggs are step one," I said.

His ears went pink.

Sun came through the window over the sink in a long square across the linoleum.

Waffles sat in the middle of it, staring at the pan with her whole soul.

Tank lay beneath the table with his chin on his paws and his eyes going back and forth between us.

I slid the eggs onto two plates, and added toast and a pile of the bacon I'd burned a little on purpose, because he liked it black.

I set his plate in front of him, and my own beside it.

I did not sit.

"Move your chair back from the table," I said.

"Why?"

"Do as you're told."

He pushed the chair back a foot, and watched me, and put his coffee down.

I set my fork on the edge of my plate, and stepped between his knees, and climbed into his lap.

The T-shirt rode up my thighs.

I had put on nothing else.

He found that out all at once, with his hands on my hips, and his mouth fell open.
