Chapter 13: What I Own
Declan reached the side chapel and did not ask what she had said.
He looked at my face, and then at Paola's.
"Gary," I told him. "Put her with the capos' families. Nobody from Renato's mother gets within a mile."
"I'm not going to Naples," Paola whispered.
"You're not going anywhere you can't walk out of," Declan said.
One of his men took her arm, gently, and she went with him through the sacristy door.
She looked back at me once.
"Where are you going?" Declan asked.
"Oak Brook."
"I'll drive."
"You'll drive, and you'll wait at the gate. He's my father, Declan."
"Then I'll wait at the gate."
The villa's gravel drive was the one I had learned to ride a bicycle on.
Papa's driver opened the front door before I touched it, and he looked at the floor.
"He's in the study, Miss Giulia. He's been waiting since Friday."
My father sat behind his desk with his cane across his knees and a glass of grappa he had not touched.
He did not stand.
"Close the door."
I left it open.
"Paola's mother goes to the clinic every Thursday," I said. "In your car."
"Dialysis. Forty thousand a year." He turned the glass a quarter turn. "I paid it."
"And her rent."
"Two years of it, before that Christmas party. You've been talking to her."
"Say it plain, Papa."
He looked at me for a long time, and then he did.
"Renato's father died, and the boy took the table with two hundred of my men and nobody to answer to. A wife can't be a leash, Giulia. You love him, and you'd have kept quiet."
"So you bought a girl."
