Chapter 17: Tied Badly on Purpose

In the suite on the twenty-second floor, I turned every lamp on.

Declan stood inside the door with his coat still on, watching me do it.

"You would have let me go back," I said.

"If you'd asked."

"I know. That's why I didn't."

He let out a short, helpless laugh and rubbed his face with one hand.

"Giulia, I have never in my life been this afraid of a staircase."

"Take off your coat."

He took it off.

"Tie."

He pulled it loose and held it out to me, and I wound it once around my fist.

"On the bed," I said. "On your back."

He looked at the tie, and at me.

"Terms," he said, very low. "Nobody touches you unless you start it."

"I'm starting it. And you don't touch me until I say."

"Is that a rule or a dare?"

"Lie down, Harrigan."

He lay down.

I knelt over him and took his wrists, one at a time, and tied them to the iron rail of the headboard.

He tested the knot once, and it held.

I sat back on his thighs and looked at him in the full light, the grey in his hair and the split in his eyebrow and the old scars in a pale line across his ribs.

"Eight years ago you went to my father's study and asked for me," I said.

"Yes."

"I only learned it last week."

"I couldn't tell you."

"Now I'm looking at you."

His chest went up and down hard.
