Chapter 5: Stance
Maeve changed my bandage on Saturday morning at the kitchen table, and she talked the entire time.
"He cried at a dog food commercial once," she said. "The one with the old retriever. Twenty-six years old, Dec was, with a gun on him, and he went out to the car."
"That is not true," Declan said from the stove.
"I was there. I handed him a napkin."
"You handed me a napkin and told me I was a disgrace to the Harrigans."
"That too," Maeve said, and winked at me. "He'll be in a mood this morning. He's taking you to the range."
"I didn't say a mood," Declan said.
"You're frying an egg for the third time."
He looked down at the pan.
There were three eggs in it.
The range was in the basement of a Dorchester body shop, a long concrete room with four lanes and a rack of ear protection that had seen better years.
Declan put a pistol in my hand and stepped back.
I had learned to shoot at twelve, behind my father's farmhouse in Oak Brook, and I had been good.
Renato had called it unbecoming for a Falzone wife, and I had let seven years of dust settle on it.
I raised the pistol and fired six times.
The paper target jerked on its wire.
Declan reeled it in and held it up, and four of the six holes were outside the black.
"That's the worst I've ever seen from a Brandolini," he said.
"I'm rusty."
"You're standing like you're apologizing."
"I'm standing like my husband's mother taught me to stand in a church."
