Chapter 23: Nine Hours
The hospital was a twenty-minute drive, and Cesare made it in nine.
He carried me from the car to the doors in his arms, against all my orders.
"Put me down."
"No."
"I can walk."
"You're having a contraction. Hold on to my neck."
I held on to his neck.
Behind us, two black cars pulled up and men started getting out.
I saw them and lifted my head.
"Cesare. Tell them to go."
"They're only here to..."
"Not one of them comes past this door. Not in the waiting room, not in the hall. If I see a gun in this building I'm having this baby in the parking lot."
He turned.
"Back to the cars," he said.
The men stood there with their mouths open.
"Now."
They went.
It took nine hours.
I will not tell it all.
Tillie arrived at the fourth hour in her pajamas, with her wrist wrapped in a brace and a sandwich she was not allowed to give me.
She sat in the corner and ate it herself.
"You look terrible," she said at the sixth hour.
"I'm having a baby."
"Still."
I threw a paper cup at her.
Cesare stood at my left shoulder through all of it, and I told him when to hold my hand and when to let go.
He did exactly what I said.
At the seventh hour I screamed at him.
I called him the worst things I could think of, in front of the nurse, the doctor and God.
"You did this to me!"
"Yes."
"You and your sister and your stupid pills!"
"Yes, Jo."
"Don't agree with me!"
"I don't know what else to say."
"Say something useful!"
He thought for a moment.
"I love you," he said. "I'll hold anything you want me to hold."
I gripped his hand so hard that something in it cracked.
