Chapter 6: Four Rules
Cesare came at nine, alone, on foot.
I saw him through the glass door under the streetlight, with his hands in his pockets and no coat.
I unlocked it and locked it again behind him.
Tillie stayed in the back room with the door open a crack.
I had told her to stay there and to call nobody.
The counter was bare except for the bottle, the tablet in its twist of tissue and the pharmacist's statement.
"Sit," I said.
He sat on the stool by the register, and I stood on the other side of the counter.
"Read it."
He picked up the statement and read it.
I watched his eyes move down the page and stop.
He went back to the top and read it again.
"This is wrong," he said.
"It's signed. She photographed the imprint."
"Bruna told me they were laxatives."
"Bruna told me the same thing. Then she asked me last week if I'd kept the bottle."
His hand started to shake.
He put the paper down and pressed his palm flat on it to stop it.
"I never looked at the bottle," he said.
"I know."
"I thought it was a prop. It was supposed to be sugar. We needed something for you to be tempted by, so we could see what you'd do." He looked up. "I was going to stop you at the bathroom door. I stood in the hall for an hour with my keys in my hand."
"Then you left at six."
"I thought you'd already decided. I thought you'd flushed them. I saw it in your face when you said you wanted the baby."
"Then why did you nod?"
He had no answer.
"Jo, I swear on my father."
