Chapter 13: You Knew
I took my arm back out of my coat sleeve.
Romina watched me do it with her head tilted, waiting for me to cry.
I walked past her to the study door and opened it without knocking.
Vin was where I'd left him, on the edge of the desk with his glass.
He looked up with hope on his face.
It died when he saw mine.
"You knew," I said.
He didn't ask what I meant.
That was the worst part.
He didn't even pretend for a second.
He looked past me at the hall, at Romina in her white nightgown on the bottom step.
Then he set the glass down very carefully.
"I protected my family."
"I'm your family."
"You were never in danger by then. It was over. She was hysterical, she was bleeding, she didn't know what she was saying..."
"She knew the church. She knew the envelope. She knew which seat."
"Simona."
"You stood in my kitchen at two in the morning and you said Russians."
He spread his hands.
"What was I supposed to say? My brother's widow tried to kill my wife? In front of my men? They'd have put her in the river by breakfast."
