"We're looking," Benno said. "Every boy I've got."
The next afternoon the oldest of the old men sent word through him.
They would judge Vin and Romina at the same table, on the same day, or not at all.
Bring them the woman.
Nobody could.
Kirill's men watched the airport, the train station on 30th Street and every bus that left the city.
Benno's dockmen watched the river.
Romina had walked out of her apartment with a purse and stepped off the edge of the earth.
On the second Saturday of December, I got married anyway.
Nadia did my hair in the little room with the slanted ceiling and the clanking radiator, where I'd slept my first night on Bustleton Avenue.
She had pins in her mouth and was crying, which made her very hard to understand.
"Stop moving."
"I'm not moving. You're crying on my head."
"I'm allowed. I'm the sister."
My dress was ivory silk with long sleeves, made by an old woman on Castor Avenue.
She'd measured me with her lips pressed together and refused to say a single compliment until the last fitting.
