Chapter 20: Ten Days
The day after the study, Teo bought Dilly a bike.
It was purple, with streamers on the handles and a white basket on the front for the bird.
He brought it up to the cemetery on a Sunday morning because the lanes were the only flat ground he trusted.
"She'll fall," I said.
"Then she'll get up."
"You've never taught anybody to ride a bike."
"My uncle taught me." He stopped. "So I know what not to do."
He ran behind her down the main lane in his long black overcoat, one hand on the back of her seat.
The crows lined the oaks and watched.
The cockatiel rode in the basket and screamed at every turn.
"He says go faster," Dilly yelled back.
"Tell him he's not in charge."
"He says he's always in charge."
She wobbled past the Speranza vault and the angel, past the 1911 headstone I'd been cleaning the day all this started.
At the bottom of the hill Teo let go.
She didn't know.
She rode fifteen feet on her own before she looked back and saw him standing there with his hands empty.
