Chapter 22: The Chapel Again

The whole chapel turned to look at him.

Eight pews, every one full.

Men stood three deep along the stone walls, and the wives wore black.

Gran sat at the end of the front row in her wheelchair, oxygen on, her church cardigan buttoned to the neck.

Dilly was at home with the housekeeper and six of Teo's men. My term.

Ignazio came down the aisle leaning on a cane I'd never seen him use.

He looked older. He'd made sure of it.

Behind him came three of the six old men from Teo's office, and their sons.

They sat down on the left side of the aisle together.

Teo stood at the front under the stained-glass Saint Francis.

He didn't move.

Ignazio stopped in front of him and spread his hands.

"Teo. They say I took the child." His voice rang off the stone. "I took my grand-niece for a cookie. My driver was clumsy at the school. Your wife called the police on her own family." He turned to the pews. "The police. In our business. Has that ever happened in this family? Ever?"
