Chapter 23: The Ring on the Pillow
I picked the ring up off his pillow.
I pulled on my jeans and work jacket and went down the stairs with my boots in my hand.
The man on the front gate stood up when he saw me.
"Where did he go?"
The man looked at the ground.
"He said not to say."
"I'm not asking what he said."
"He drove himself. No men. North, over the bridge."
Across the river.
I knew where.
There was only one place across the river that Teo Speranza had ever gone in the dark, six years ago, with gasoline.
I took Gran's old truck.
The bakery was on a narrow street on the North Side, with the family's name in gold on the window.
The ovens were already lit at four in the morning.
Teo's car was parked out front.
Two men in white aprons stood at the door with their arms crossed, and neither one was a baker.
"I'm his wife," I said.
"Go home, lady."
I walked between them.
One grabbed my jacket. I shrugged out of it and kept going, and he stood there holding it.
The back room was hot and smelled of yeast.
