Chapter 24: The Funeral Mass
At a quarter to ten, I drove the hearse up Christian Street with the Don behind me.
The embalmer sat beside me in his black suit.
The church was the one where Marcello's mother had her Mass fourteen years ago.
Gray stone, three sets of doors, a long flight of steps.
The steps were full of men.
They stood in two lines from the sidewalk to the doors, the heads of the Families and their sons, in dark coats.
At the top, under the arch, stood Fabrizio.
He was in a new black suit with a white rose in the lapel.
He had his right hand out.
A man I knew, who owned three restaurants on Passyunk, bent over that hand and kissed it.
I saw the gold flash on it from the curb.
"There it is," the embalmer said quietly.
"I see it."
Tiziana stood one step below her son in a black veil and gloves, greeting each man before he went up.
She was smiling under the veil.
I could tell from the way she held her chin.
I parked at the curb, exactly where a hearse parks, and got out.
The lines of men turned to look at me.
