Chapter 28: A Real Proposal
I didn't say yes.
I sat up on the bed with the sheet around me and looked at him.
"Ask me again," I said. "When you've earned the answer."
He propped himself up on his elbows.
"I thought I had."
"You earned this," I said, and waved at the bed. "Marrying me is different. Marrying me comes with terms."
"Name them."
"Two," I said. "First. No blood on my doorstep. Not one drop. Whatever you do with your father's chair, it never comes up those front steps."
He didn't answer right away.
That was why I believed him when he did.
"And second?"
"The fund stays out of your business. Forever. No Brancato signs a fund check again. Not you. Not your sons. Nobody."
"My sons," he said.
"Hypothetically."
"You said sons."
"Go to sleep, Marcello."
He lay back down, grinning at the ceiling.
In the morning, Amalia had already heard.
Of course she had.
The vent.
"A church," she said, before I'd sat down. "A real one. With a Mass. And the priest who knows how to say my name."
"Nonna, I haven't said yes."
