Chapter 32: Two Clocks
A year later, the two clocks in our front hall still argued.
His struck first.
Ours came a half second behind.
I'd stopped hearing it as an argument months ago.
Now it just sounded like two people who'd agreed to say the same thing in their own time.
At seven in the morning they both struck, and I came down the stairs in my black work dress with a list in my hand.
The driver was at the kitchen table in a white shirt with a mortuary science textbook open beside his eggs.
He was in his second semester.
He'd passed every exam so far and complained about all of them.
"Anatomy at eight," he said. "Then the removal on Federal Street. Then I'm yours."
"Then you're mine," I said, "and you'll do the paperwork for it, because you're going to have to learn it."
He groaned into his coffee.
The embalmer came up from the back with his reading glasses on his head and a towel over his shoulder.
