Chapter 16: Cicero
The Cicero depot burned orange against a black sky, and we could see it from the highway.
It was a long metal shed behind a chain-link fence, where the Ferraro trucks parked and the drivers drank bad coffee between runs.
By the time our cars skidded onto the gravel lot, the roof was glowing from underneath.
A man in a soot-streaked jacket ran at us, coughing.
"The gate was chained from outside," he said.
"Two are still in the office at the back, Signora, and the loading door is jammed."
Dominic was already out of the car.
He stripped off his coat, and a capo poured a canister of water over his head.
"Call the fire department," I said to the capo.
The man stared at me.
"Signora, they'll ask questions."
"Let them."
"Two men are inside, and I'd rather answer questions than carry two more people to the cemetery."
He pulled out his phone.
Dominic turned to me with water running down his face.
