Chapter 20: The Wake
Dominic took a long breath, and he did not look away from his son.
"No, bud," he said.
"I was going to stand very close to him until he left."
Angelo wiped his nose on Rex's tail.
"Rex says that's the same thing."
Dominic laughed, wet and cracked, and pulled him into his arms.
I stood on the wet lawn and watched the two of them with my hand pressed flat against my own ribs.
The funeral home on James Street smelled of lilies and floor wax.
The old driver lay in a closed casket at the front of the room, with a rosary wound through the handles.
His widow sat in the first row in black, with her four grandchildren pressed against her sides.
I stood at the casket with Dominic beside me, not in front of me, and his hand rested on the small of my back.
"He talked about the boy's whistle," the widow said, taking both my hands.
