Chapter 23: The Pier
"The end of the pier," Dominic said again, flatly.
"He wants you alone, and he's in a hurry."
"Then he's afraid," I said, and reached for my shoes.
Oswego Harbor was gray at dawn, with a mist lying on the water and gulls complaining on the roof of the bonded warehouse.
The pier ran two hundred feet into the lake.
At the end of it, a white cabin cruiser sat low in the water, with its engines grumbling.
Aldo stood on the planks in front of it in his camel coat, with a leather suitcase at his feet.
Two of his Buffalo men waited on the deck behind him, and they had rifles slung across their chests.
Along the road at the head of the pier, in a line, stood forty men in dark jackets.
They did not carry anything.
The nephew was at the center of them, bareheaded in the mist.
Dominic's car stopped behind them, and I got out.
"Stay here," I said.
"Pamela."
"Where I can see you, and with your hands empty."
