Chapter 6: The Rinaldi Rule

"That order has a Cook County stamp on it," Raf said, very evenly. "We are in Nassau County, New York."

The deputy looked at the paper again.

"It needs a New York judge to sign it before I can act on it, sir."

"Then you cannot act on it today."

The lawyer's smile slipped.

"A formality. We will have the signature by Monday."

"By Monday," I said, "I will have been in front of the Commission."

I said it to the lawyer's face and watched his polish crack for the first time.

The deputies got back in their cars.

The lawyer stood alone at the gate with his leather folder.

"Mr. Pagano will see you Sunday," he said stiffly. "He looks forward to it."

I thought of Sandro looking forward to it, and my hands went cold.

Raf's did not move.

On Sunday, the Commission sat in Newark, in the back room of a restaurant that had been closed for lunch since 1974.

The table was round and enormous and dark with age.

Five men sat at it.

The oldest used a cane and had a face like a closed door.

Nobody else spoke before he did.

My husband was already seated at the far end.

He wore his charcoal suit and the black tie he had worn to my father's funeral.

Gia Crespi sat beside him in a black dress, with a handkerchief at her eyes.

She looked up when I came in on Raf's arm.

She did not smile this time.

I took the empty chair at the near end.

Raf stood behind me, and Dario behind him.

"Signora Rinaldi," said the oldest man. "We have seen your statement. Alessandro Pagano has given us his own. We are not going to ask for a long speech. Tell us in plain words why you left."

I stood up.

My knees were not steady, so I put both hands flat on the table.

"I left because the night before, I found divorce papers in my husband's study. His first love was in my bed in his shirt the next morning."
