Chapter 24: Midnight Mass

"Gone where?" I said.

"If I knew that, he wouldn't be gone." The agent's voice was tight. "Marin, we can call tonight off."

I looked across Fia's front room.

Coco was on the floor in her pajamas, wrapping a present for Fia's father in the comics page.

Ozzie was at the broken upright, pressing the missing E-flat over and over to see if it had healed.

"No," I said. "He set the time. He'll come."

At eleven-thirty that night St. Louis Cathedral was so full people stood along the back wall.

Candles on every pillar.

Poinsettias banked red around the altar.

The same aisle I'd walked up in my driving jeans, in October.

This time I wore a black coat Ezio's mother had given me, and the twins wore their good shoes.

Coco had her red wool coat on.

Fia had asked me twice if I was sure.

I was sure.

He'd said Coco's coat in front of a wire.

I wanted him to see it.

We sat in the sixth row, on the aisle.

Barones filled the pews on our left, Fia beside me, her father at the end.

Severinos on the right, the three old men in a row, the cane across their knees.
