Chapter 27: The Stand
I folded the witness list in half and gave it back to her.
"Let him come," I said. "I'll be in the room."
Then I finished buttoning Coco's coat, because it was cold out, and she was eight.
The trial opened on Ash Wednesday.
Nine years to the morning since I sat in the field office in my bar apron and wrote his name.
Half the courtroom had gray crosses smudged on their foreheads from the early Mass.
Gaspare had one too.
He sat at the defense table in a gray suit, with his silver hair combed back and his soft hands folded.
The Barones filled the left side of the gallery.
The Severinos filled the right.
Ezio sat in the front row on the right, next to his mother.
I wasn't allowed to look at him.
The prosecutor called me second, after the first cop at the scene.
The walk to the stand was familiar from the bail hearing, and my boots were steady.
"State your name for the jury."
"Marin Callaway."
It came out of my mouth.
He took me through it slowly, the way we'd practiced.
