Chapter 31: The Veil
I held out my hand.
He looked at it, confused.
"Pen," I said.
He gave me the black pen from his jacket.
Under his line, on the soft square of hotel notepaper, I wrote my answer.
Yes. Don't you dare check out.
He read it.
He laughed, a short, stunned sound, and put his face in my hair, and stayed there.
We were married in October, on a Saturday, in St. Louis Cathedral.
A year, almost to the day, from the morning I walked up the aisle in my driving jeans.
I wore white this time.
Ezio's mother had given me her own veil, wrapped in tissue paper in a box from 1985.
Old lace, gone the color of cream.
She'd pinned it into my hair herself in the sacristy with her mouth full of pins.
"He'll cry," she said around them. "His father cried. Severino men cry at weddings. Never at funerals."
"I won't cry."
"I know. That's why I gave you the veil. So nobody checks."
Fia was my maid of honor, in red, with red lipstick, of course.
"I said I'd burn his hotel down if you cried," she said, fixing my train. "That still stands. Today especially."
"I'm not going to cry."
"I'm going to cry," Fia said. "Don't look at me."
Coco was the flower girl.
She'd been told to drop petals gently, one at a time.
She threw them in big fistfuls at the pews.
Ozzie was the ring bearer, in a gray suit and a tie he'd tied himself.
It was perfectly straight.
He carried the rings on a cushion and didn't smile once, all the way up the aisle, because it was an important job.
The cathedral was full.
Barones on the left.
Severinos on the right.
And in the front pew on the left, side by side, Ezio's mother and Fia's father.
She'd put on a navy dress, the first time in nine years she'd worn anything but black.
He'd tucked his napkin into his breast pocket, just in case.
