Chapter 4: Closed File

Ezio stood up so fast his chair hit the wall.

"Double the gate," he told the man in the doorway. "Two in the hall. One under their window."

"Boss."

The man went.

Ezio turned back to me.

"Nobody touches them. Nobody."

"Including your uncle?"

His jaw worked.

"My uncle raised me."

"I know," I said. "That's what scares me."

His mother was still sitting in the chair, holding her own elbows.

Fia picked up her bottle.

"I'm sleeping on your couch, Severino," she said. "I'm not driving home in this dress to explain it to my father."

Nobody argued.

On Monday morning Ezio stood in the front hall with his car keys.

"Where are you going?"

"Out."

"My driver will take you."

"Your driver will tell you where."

"Yes."

"Then no."

My own car had been towed from Jackson Square on Saturday.

Ezio had promised to get it back "when it made sense."

So I'd called Fia at six.

Her car pulled up at the gate at eight, a dented white hatchback that smelled like anise and powdered sugar.

She leaned over and pushed the passenger door open.

"Get in. I have to be back for the lunch rush."

Ezio watched us go from the front steps.

He didn't stop me.

I noticed that.

The FBI field office sat out by the lake, all glass and flagpoles.

Fia parked and turned the engine off.

"Want me to come in?"

"No. Thank you."

"I'll be right here eating your cannoli."

"I don't have cannoli."

She reached into the back seat and came up with a white box.

"You do now."

At the front desk I gave my real name for the first time in eight years.

It came out of my mouth strange.

They made me wait forty minutes.

Then a woman in her forties came down for me herself.
