Chapter 26: Like a Stranger
Teo looked at me for a long moment.
Then he went to the end of my line.
Forty people turned around to watch him do it.
He waited behind a woman with a stroller and the produce terminal man, with his hands in his coat pockets, for ten minutes.
When he got to the glass, Benedetta was at the register.
"Next," she said, without a flicker.
"I'd like to talk to the owner," he said.
I came out from the back with a tray of sfogliatelle.
He took a breath.
"Hi," he said. "I'm Teo. I've been buying your cannoli for two years. I never told you that I think about you at five in the morning. Would you have dinner with me on Friday?"
"I don't know you," I said.
"No," he said. "That's the idea."
"What do you do for a living?"
The whole line went quiet.
"Trucks," he said. "Mostly."
The butcher laughed out loud from the doorway.
"Friday," I said. "Eight. You pick me up at the front door like a person."
"Yes, ma'am."
"And you don't pick a place you own."
