He came to my apartment at seven that night with snow on his shoulders and a paper bag of Teta's cabbage rolls.
I did not take the bag. I stood in the narrow kitchen with my arms crossed.
"Assunta says you went to see her," I said.
He put the bag on the table. He did not pretend.
"Yes," he said.
"Alone, in her kitchen, on the night they set a man's hand in metal."
"Yes," he said again.
"What did you ask her?" I said.
"What she'd take," he said. "To leave the deckhand's family alone. To let your father's boats be."
"And?"
"She said the hall and the note were mine again, if I brought you to her table at St. Joseph's and sat you beside her."
He looked straight at me. "I said no before she finished the sentence."
