Chapter 23: After the Bread
The hall ate. That was the part I had not planned for.
When the doors closed behind Assunta, the senior baker clapped her hands twice, and six hundred people sat down and ate free bread.
I did not eat. I slipped out through the side door and found her on the church steps.
She sat on the top step in her black wool with her coat folded beside her. The steel thermos stood by her shoe.
The March light was thin and bright, and the snow had gone to wet gray ridges along the curb.
"You can sit," Assunta said. "I won't bite. I have no teeth left for it."
I stayed standing, two steps below her.
"I did not enjoy that," she said. "You may believe it or not."
"I did not enjoy drowning," I said.
"No." She looked at the thermos. "Dominic made the coffee, the day he killed me. It was very good coffee."
